PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism comes from the Latin (and before that from the Greek) word for kidnaping. It means taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. In fact I just committed plagiarism by giving the word-for-word definition from Google without making it clear that those were not my own words. To correct it I should put quotes around the sentence and add a parenthetical citation like this:
"It means taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own." (Google)

NEVER DO THIS
- copy verbatim (word for word) from a source and paste it into your essay, report, or assignment.
- Use a thesaurus to change some or most of the words from a source and use it in your essay, report, or assignment.
- Put quotes around the text that you copy from the source.
- At the end of the quote give a parenthetical citation with the author's last name, if you know it, or the title of the article or website and a page number if necessary.
- Include the entire citation in a works cited or bibliography page at the end of your assignment.
- Paraphrase the text (Completely rewrite it, explaining the idea in your own words)
- At the end of the quote give a parenthetical citation with the author's last name, if you know it, or the title of the article or website and the page number if necessary.
- Include the entire citation in a works cited or bibliography page at the end of your assignment.
